Marine 1st Lt. Michael LiCalzi, who lost his life commanding a tank unit in the Iraqi desert eight years ago, was a hometown boy from Garden City who enjoyed many a youthful moment surfing the waves at Lido West Beach Park. Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and the Ace in the Hole Foundation, created in Michael’s memory, will honor the fallen hero during the 5th Annual Beach Run & Walk Fundraiser at Lido West at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 10.
“The Town of Hempstead proudly welcomes the LiCalzi family, along with Michael’s friends, admirers and fellow Marines to Lido West to honor his memory and support his foundation,” commented Supervisor Kate Murray. “Last year’s event raised over $80,000 for the Ace in Hole Foundation and we hope to exceed that figure this year by attracting a record number of participants.”
The Beach Run & Walk will salute the family of Lance Corporal Jason K. Burnett, USMC, a member of 1st Lt. Michael LiCalzi’s tank crew who died beside his comrade in the line of duty. The event will also honor Scott Snyder, a friend of the LiCalzi family, who raised over $12,000 last summer in his “Bike for Mike” cross-country bicycle fundraiser.
The Ace in the Hole Foundation has designated the Marines of 2nd Tank Battalion, Unites States Marine Corps Tankers Association, the Wounded Warrior Project, the Huntington’s Disease Society of America, and FIRST (Foundation for Ichthyosis and Related Skin Types) as recipients of this year’s fund-raising efforts.
Day of event registration will be held at Lido West Town Park, 200 Lido Boulevard in Lido Beach from 9 to 10:30 a.m. The registration fee is $25 per person, with a student rate of $10. Active duty personnel and military veterans will be permitted to participate free of charge.
A two-mile course will be set up along the beachfront at Lido West and participants may choose to run or walk the distance. Participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt during a free, pre-event breakfast.
A prize raffle and live music will highlight the post event festivities.
