Hempstead’s Senior Citizen Health And Wellness Fair- Ensuring The Health Of Golden-Aged Residents

Supervisor Kate Murray invites senior residents to join her at Lido Beach Town Park on Thursday, June 12th for Hempstead Town’s annual Senior Citizen Health and Wellness Fair. The beachside event has historically been the largest senior health fair on Long Island.

“The Senior Health and Wellness Fair, presented by the Department of Senior Enrichment, offers an array of free medical screenings that can help ensure the health and well-being of our golden-aged residents,” said Murray. “Medical representatives from seven participating hospitals will perform screenings and provide referrals where necessary, while guest lecturers will make informative presentations.”

Seniors will be issued a booklet in which medical representatives will record the results of screenings and indicate whether a referral for follow-up is recommended.  Among the free services provided at the fair is blood pressure, PSA testing (Prostate Cancer), chiropractic, podiatry, cholesterol and blood glucose screenings, hearing, dental, vision, height and weight, balance and posture analysis. New to the fair this year is video otoscopy, which makes it possible to view on a monitor and photograph the outer ear, ear canal and eardrum.

“From blood pressure and cholesterol screenings to hearing and vision testing, participating doctors and medical personnel will conduct beneficial testing and screenings in one convenient location. As they make their way around the display booths, residents can gather health and financial-related information that addresses the particular needs of our seniors,” said Senior Councilman Anthony Santino.

Town services to be offered at the fair include the Town Clerk’s Mobile Passport Office and Senior Identification Program, the Animal Shelter’s Pet Therapy Program and the Receiver of Taxes “Taxpayer Check-ups.”  Seniors may also register for the Department of Senior Enrichment’s Vial of Life Program, a kit which includes a health care proxy and emergency health care information.

“I am pleased to bring important services to senior citizens with the Mobile Town Clerk’s Office,” stated Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad. “The event provides a host of important health services and quality-of-life programs.”

This event is sponsored by Hempstead Town in cooperation with Franklin Hospital/North Shore University Hospital Health Care System, Mercy Hospital, North Shore University Hospital/LIJ Health System, NU Health (Nassau University Medical Center), Saint Francis Hospital, South Nassau Communities Hospital and Winthrop University Hospital.

“Whether receiving free medical screenings or obtaining a Senior ID Card, the annual Health and Wellness Fair is an excellent source of potentially life-saving information for our senior residents,” concluded Murray.

The fair will be held at Lido Beach Town Park, 630 Lido Boulevard in Lido Beach, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Parking and admission to the fair are free.  Free transportation is available from the town’s 16 senior centers. It is suggested that seniors bring their own lunch to the fair.
