As the deadline for paying the first half 2011-2012 school tax approaches, Receiver of Taxes Don Clavin reminds residents of the payment options available at Hempstead Town. Taxpayers who wish to pay in person may do so at the main office in Hempstead, at the mobile tax office, at one of the town's satellite offices or at the EZ-Pay drive thru payment windows. In addition, tax bills can be paid by credit card or e-check, online or via telephone. Tax payments received or postmarked by November 10 will be penalty-free.
"I am pleased to announce that as a result of the tremendous popularity of our EZ-Pay drive thru payment window behind 200 North Franklin Street in Hempstead, we have added a second drive thru in order to better serve the public," said Don Clavin. Taxpayers may pay their tax bills in person from the comfort of their car at the EZ-Pay drive thru payment windows from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on November 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 9 and 10. Only checks and money orders are accepted at the payment windows.
Office hours at the main tax office will be extended during peak collection times. Hours of operation will be 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on November 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 9 and 10. The fully staffed main office accepts cash, money orders or checks and can assist taxpayers with account inquiries.
Satellite offices established at Rock Hall Museum (located at 199 Broadway in Lawrence) and Levittown Hall (located at 201 Levittown Parkway in Hicksville) will be open to receive tax payments (checks and money orders only) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on November 3, 4, 7, 9 and 10.
"Our mobile town hall brings town government to local neighborhoods," remarked Clavin. "This is especially convenient for residents who have limited time or ability to travel to the main tax office and desire to make their tax payments in person by check or money order." The mobile tax office will visit the following locations from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. as follows:
Tuesday, November 1 - Merrick Senior Center, 2550 Clubhouse Road, Merrick
Wednesday, November 2- Town Parking Lot O-3, Davison Avenue, Oceanside
Thursday, November 3 - Elmont Memorial Library, 700 Hempstead Turnpike, Elmont
Friday, November 4 - Franklin Square Senior Center, 1182 Martha Pl., Franklin Square
"My office also accepts electronic payments via e-check and credit card," added Clavin. Residents who would like to pay via credit card or e-check may log onto the town's website at www.TOH.LI and follow the Receiver of Taxes link to "Online Tax Payments," or call Official Payments Corporation toll-free at 1-877-306-6056. A convenience fee of 2.5% of the total tax payment will be incurred for credit card payments. A flat fee of $2 will be charged for electronic check payments. Hempstead Town receives no portion of these fees.
"As Supervisor Kate Murray and I remain committed to assisting taxpayers in every possible manner, my office will continue to put great ideas into action that make paying your taxes more convenient," concluded Clavin.
When making payments in person, taxpayers should bring their entire tax bill with them. Tax stubs should not be detached from the bill. For further information visit the town's website at www.TOH.LI or contact the Office of Receiver of Taxes at (516) 538-1500.
