Extension of Tax Deadline Granted For All School Districts

Last week, and in response to conditions brought about by weather, electrical outages and potential banking issues, Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and Receiver of Taxes Donald X. Clavin, Jr., asked the governor’s office to extend the November 13th deadline for the payment of school taxes by property owners in all districts serving the Town of Hempstead.

We were initially advised that the governor signed an order extending the deadline to December 4th, but only in districts which had independently requested an extension.  The order specifically lists school districts in Bellmore, East Meadow, Freeport, Hempstead, Hewlett-Woodmere, Island Trees, Levittown, Long Beach, North Bellmore, North Merrick, Oceanside, Seaford, Uniondale, Wantagh, Westbury and West Hempstead as having independently requested such extensions.

The governor, under a separate executive order issued on November 13th, granted an extension to the following school districts:  Lawrence Union Free School District, Franklin Square Union Free School District, New Hyde Park-Garden City Park Union Free School District, Malverne Union Free School District, Floral Park-Bellerose Union Free School District, Elmont Union Free School District, Lynbrook Union Free School District, Valley Stream Union Free School District 24, Valley Stream Union Free School District 13, Valley Stream Union Free School District 30, Baldwin Union Free School District, Garden City Union Free School District, Rockville Centre Union Free School District, Island Park Union Free School District.

On November 20th, the Governor issued an executive order granting an extension to the East Rockaway Union Free School District, Merrick Union Free School District and Roosevelt Union Free School District.

Accordingly, residents of the school districts listed above may pay their school taxes, without penalty, until December 4th.  Residents of all other districts in Hempstead Town must make their payments by, Tuesday, November 13th, to avoid incurring a penalty.
