Councilman Santino, Town Building Department to Hold Oceanside/ Island Park Meeting, Information Available for Those Affected by Hurricane Sandy
|November 26, 2012|
To help Oceanside and Island Park residents still struggling in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Hempstead Town Senior Councilman Anthony Santino will be holding a Town Hall Meeting on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. at Oceanside High School (3160 Skillman Avenue, Oceanside). Santino will be joined by members of the town Building Department, who will explain the many ways in which the town has streamlined the building permitting process and waived fees for residents of unincorporated areas who are seeking to rebuild or make repairs to storm-battered homes.
“Hempstead Town is doing everything within its power to help residents of Island Park and Oceanside, communities that were devastated by Hurricane Sandy,” said Santino. “As people begin to rebuild their homes, the town has taken a number of steps to assist neighbors who are seeking building permits to rebuild their homes during this difficult time.”
The town Building Department is waiving all permit fees for “in-kind” storm-related structural repairs and temporary housing trailers within the unincorporated areas of Hempstead Town. And, the town is waiving building variance requirements for residents (within unincorporated areas of the township) who want to rebuild their homes at higher elevations to meet FEMA flood standards.
What’s more, the town dispatched work crews throughout the township to remove trees and debris from the streets; made extra trips to communities to pick up garbage; went door-to-door to distribute food, water, clothing and cleaning supplies to residents; opened free warming and shower locations for residents displaced by the hurricane; and, recently partnered with the Island Park Union Free School District to host an informative seminar to demonstrate how to properly sanitize once-flooded homes and safely remove damaged walls, flooring and other building materials.
“Hempstead Town stands alongside residents as they begin to rebuild their homes, communities and livelihoods after this devastating hurricane,” concluded Santino. “I urge all Oceanside and Island Park neighbors to join us at this informative Town Hall Meeting on November 28th.”
