For commuting residents who prefer two wheels over four, Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray, Councilwoman Angie Cullin and Councilman Gary Hudes are inviting them to participate in a lottery for the use of eight no-cost bike lockers at the Bellmore train station. The lockers will be available for use by the eight winners for a one-year period, beginning on Monday, April 1, 2013.
“Now entering the second year of this program, eight bike lockers will provide lottery winners with a safe, secure location at which they can lock up their bikes before getting on the train,” stated Murray. “The Town of Hempstead encourages all our health-conscious and environmentally minded residents to enter this lottery for a chance to use a free locker for one year.”
Each of the bike lockers is 4 feet tall, 6 feet long and 3 ¼ feet wide, all conveniently located on the north side of the tracks at the Bellmore train station. Each locker easily fits a standard bicycle, protecting it from damage, theft and bad weather. The town requires a $40 key deposit, which is refunded at the end of the one-year lease. No sub-leasing is permitted.
“Supervisor Murray and I are proud to make these bike lockers available to residents for the second year in a row,” said Councilwoman Cullin. Added Councilman Hudes, “We look forward to having eight less cars on the road, and eight more happy and healthy residents in Hempstead Town.”
The winners will be randomly selected during a lottery drawing to be held on Monday, March 25, 2013. Applications for the lottery, which is being administered by the Town Clerk’s Office, are being accepted through Monday, March 18. To obtain an application, residents should contact the Town Clerk’s Office at (516) 812-3026.
