Town’s Senior Writers to Present Reading of Original Works

Members of the Department of Senior Enrichment’s Creative Writers Workshop are holding a reading of their original works on Wednesday, June 12th at 1 p.m. at the Merrick Theatre and Center of the Arts announced Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray.

“The senior residents who have participated in the Creative Writers Workshop will be sharing their compositions with the community at this upcoming forum,” said Supervisor Murray.  “The short stories, poems and memoirs are inspired by the workshop members’ own life experiences, imaginations and emotions.”

The Merrick Theatre and Center of the Arts, located at 2222 Hewlett Avenue in Merrick, has generously donated the use of its facility for this annual event.  The public is invited to attend and admission is free. The readings will be followed by an informal coffee hour.

“Later this year the town will publish an annual journal of the original works entitled Musings of Maturity XXV. Over the past 25 years, the Creative Writing Workshop has inspired many artistic seniors to fulfill a lifelong ambition to write,” stated Senior Councilman Anthony Santino.

“Area residents are welcome to attend the presentation on June 12 and lend their support to the writers. Senior residents who aspire to write and develop their artistic abilities are invited to join the group, which meets for the 16-week workshop at the Merrick Senior Center,” concluded Murray.

The Creative Writers’ Workshop is partially funded through a grant from Poets and Writers, Inc.  Please contact the Town of Hempstead Department of Senior Enrichment at (516) 485-8100 for additional information regarding the Creative Writers’ Workshop.
