Supervisor Kate Murray and Senior Councilman Anthony Santino have secured a $20,000 grant for the Hispanic Brotherhood of Rockville Centre to sustain an invaluable tutoring program for area youth.
“The grant will enable our township to partner with the Hispanic Brotherhood to fund the participation of 95 youngsters, ages 5 to 14, in a tutoring and ‘Safe Place’ program that increases after-school learning experiences through personalized instruction,” commented Supervisor Murray.
The Hispanic Brotherhood is a non-profit organization that was created to assist the town’s expanding Hispanic population. Providing a myriad of essential services to support and advance Hispanic residents in the communities of Rockville Centre, Baldwin, Lynbrook, Oceanside and Freeport, the organization is particularly proud of the after school tutorial program which has advanced the learning process for many local students.
“The Hispanic Brotherhood values the loyalty and support of Hempstead Town,” stated Executive Director Margarita Grasing. “Through the efforts of our good friends Supervisor Kate Murray and Councilman Anthony Santino, our young people have the priceless opportunity to enrich their educational experiences and activities.”
Specifically, the town grant will fund tutoring for students ages 5 to 12 to encourage completion of school assignments. After the age of 12, students enter the “Safe Places Program” where they work with Hispanic Brotherhood staff to help tutor the younger children. The tutoring program is offered five days a week during the school year from 3 to 6 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the summer months.
“As Senior Councilman, I welcome the opportunity to use town resources to benefit groups that provide life enhancing opportunities for our residents,” stated Councilman Santino.
“Our township’s solid financial standing enables us to offer grant monies to assist organizations such as Hispanic Brotherhood that work tirelessly to improve the quality of life for their participants,” concluded Supervisor Murray.
