The Easiest Way to Get Your Passport!
Who Needs A Passport?
All persons, including newborn infants, are required to obtain passports in their own names for travel to most foreign countries.
In an effort to strengthen border security, the United States Departments of Homeland Security and State implemented the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative on January 23, 2007.
Currently, all U.S. citizens including children must present a passport or other approved travel document when entering the United States BY AIR. U.S. citizens can present a passport, NEXUS card at airports with NEXUS kiosks, U.S. military ID with travel orders, or a U.S. Merchant Mariner Document when on official business. Visit the Department of Homeland Security to obtain further details on border crossing requirements.
Beginning June 1, 2009, U.S. citizens entering the United States AT SEA OR LAND PORTS of entry are required to have documents that comply with the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), most commonly a U.S. passport, a passport card, a trusted traveler card such as NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST, or an enhanced driver's license.
The passport requirement does NOT apply to U.S. citizens traveling to or returning directly from a U.S. territory.
We Have The Applications
Application forms for passports are available at the Hempstead Town Clerk's Office. You must bring acceptable proof of United States Citizenship (i.e. a previous passport and certified birth certificate) and proof of identity (i.e. a previous passport and a driver's license) with you. Generally, anyone who is applying for a new passport must appear in person. (Please note: No cross outs or whiteout are allowed on any application.)
We Take The Picture
For your convenience, we can take your required passport photos (two identical 2 X 2 inch color photographs taken within the past six months, showing current appearance, full face, front view with a plain white or off-white background). A fee of $5 per person applies.
Your New Passport Is Mailed To You!
Your completed application will be processed and forwarded to Passport Services on the same day that you apply. Passport processing times have increased due to high volume. Currently, you can expect your passport to arrive within four to six weeks via first class mail. Expedited service is available from the United States Department of State for an additional fee.
We collect passport fees, which are set according to federal guidelines. Processing fees vary depending on type of passport and age of applicant. Accepted forms of payment include personal checks and money orders. Only personal checks drawn from a bank branch located within Nassau County will be accepted. Credit cards are not accepted. View the current passport fees.
Now extended through March 31, 2015, the Hempstead Town Clerk’s Office is waiving town fees for replacement Passports lost in Superstorm Sandy. Residents must show a FEMA claim or homeowner’s/flood insurance claim in order to take advantage of the fee waiver.
For each individual passport application, you must have a separate check or money order payable to the U.S. Department of State for Passport, Expedite and Overnight Return fees. Execution, Photo, Certified Mail and Overnight Mail fees can be paid by cash, check or money order payable to Nasrin Ahmad, Town Clerk. Please DO NOT prefill check amounts in advance as fees may vary with individual situations.
You may pick up a passport application and submit it for processing anytime during regular business hours Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4:45 PM. No appointment is necessary.
